Participatory events or gatherings (face-to-face and virtual via web-based discussion boards, blogs, and forums)

Participatory events or gatherings are a type of collaborative interaction. Oftentimes events such as conference consist of non-collaborative keynotes, slide presentations, and panels where an individual or group speaks to a passive audience, where there is a fixed schedule and people going in and out of sessions.

In a participatory event or gathering, participants jointly shape the agenda before and during the event instead of having a fixed schedule. The focus in such events is on peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and network building rather than large group listening. It subscribes to the three tenets of peer interaction: respect, listening, and inclusion. Participatory events are done either face to face or via web-based discussion boards, blogs, and forums.
