Healthy Eating Minnesota Community:

NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center

“Northside Healthy Eating Project”

Project Description

Although located within a metropolitan region that has frequently been ranked as one of the healthiest in the nation with an abundant supply of quality food, North Minneapolis is an exception. There are only two large grocery stores in the area serving a population over 93,000 residents. Only one of those two grocers carries an ample supply of fresh produce which further decreases accessibility to fresh produce for residents.

NorthPoint Health and Wellness, Inc. (NorthPoint), the lead organization, has created a unique partnership in an effort to address this and many other food environment issues. The partnership has more than 25 member agencies, organizations or groups representing North Minneapolis. A few partners include the City of Minneapolis, IATP, Masjid An’Nur, the U of M and Cub Foods—the primary full service grocer in the neighborhood.

The Northside Healthy Eating Project will work to change the local food environment and in the process help to improve the health of North Minneapolis residents. NorthPoint, a health and human services leader in North Minneapolis, will work with partners to increase the access and availability of healthy fruits and vegetables. The project intends to create sustainable solutions to increase the consumption of healthier foods in North Minneapolis.
