In spite of living in one of the richest agricultural regions in the nation, many residents of Western Minnesota have limited access to healthy, locally grown foods.
To help with this concern, the Land Stewardship Project (LSP)—a widely respected nonprofit organization that works to foster an ethic of stewardship for farmland and promotes sustainable agriculture and sustainable communities—is in the process of reinventing the relationship between local consumer and agricultural producers in Western Minnesota. Focusing on the Big Stone Lake Area, the LSP is developing a model for empowering communities to take control of and improve their own food environment.
They have initiated the work by creating a network of partners, reaching out into the community with various stakeholders, and connecting local agricultural producers with local and regional consumers.
